'Dogs best Eagles, Cardinals

The Hotchkiss Bulldogs had wrestling matches on Jan. 11 and 12 last week. Hotchkiss hosted Paonia on the 11th and scratched out a 38-30 victory. On the 12th the Bulldogs were in Parachute for a tri-meet with Grand Valley and Glenwood Springs. Hotchkiss lost to Glenwood Springs 39-33 and defeated the Cardinals 43-33.

The Eagles found themselves on the losing end of the score against Hotchkiss.

Paonia was having a desired effort after two matches with two six points on two decisions. Starting at 170, Anthony Felice decisioned Kaden Murray Owens 11-4 and Jaden Miller won 6-0, in the 182-pound match, over the Bulldog's Parker Katzdorn.

Hotchkiss got the first of its five pins at 195 on a Kevin Chavez fall over Poncho Lopez (3:30).

Trevor Smith followed with a pin over Hotchkiss' Devin Curtis (3:23) in the 220-pound bout.

Joseph Nault posted a 6-2 decision over Cyrus Malek' Madani in the 285-pound match as dual action turned to the lower weights.

The Eagles got six points from Zeb Etter at 106 for his forfeit win and held an 18-9 lead heading to the 113-pound match. Sergio Campos used just 0:54 to pin the Eagles' Dillon Coe at 113 and Presley Pene added six more points with his pin over Gabe Ferguson at 120.

A pin from Eli Etter over Chris Lovato and Sackett Chesnik's win by pin over Colton Deluzio at 138 would end Paonia's scoring for the match.

The Bulldogs picked up three points for Colton Hall's 6-3 decison over Grey Neal at 132 and Chase Hiatt added a 7-4 decision over Clay Campbell at 145.

Hotchkiss' Jace Peebles won by fall over Jesse Burns at 152 and Wade Katzdorn was a winner by forfeit at 160 to close out the Bulldogs' scoring for the match.

GSHS 39, Bulldogs 33

Hotchkiss had three pins in its match against Glenwood Springs. All of those pins, and a forfeit, were in the upper weights.

Wade Katzdorn (160) got by Vincent Villegas (0:31), Kaden Murray Owens (170) won by forfeit, Parker Katzdorn (182) defeated Antonio Ordonez (1:29) and Kevin Chavez (220) pinned Mason Pardo (0:37).

The Bulldogs also added decisions at 113 (Jamal Helm, 10-4, over Erik Krauth), 126 (Chris Lovato, 12-7 over Matt Flores) and Chase Hiatt's 6-2 decision over Joaquin Garcia at 145.

The Demons scattered five pins, and a forfeit, throughout the match. Max Burrell was a winner by forfeit at 1:06 with Felix Cano picking up a pin over Taylor White (120), Larry Flores adding another six points against Colton Deluzio (138), Amos Wilson (195) at 2:51 against Jace Peebles, Myles Wilson over Devin Curtis (1:06) at 195 and Jesse Dupleseys zipping past Joseph Nault (0:35) at 285.

The Demons added an 8-2 decision from Riley Prough over Hotchkiss' Colton Hall at 132.

HHS 43, GVHS 33

This match began at 132 and the Bulldogs built a 10-0 lead after two bouts. Colton Hall pinned Isiah Tigert (132) and Deluzio scored a major decison, for four points, over the Cardinals' Nate Chapman.

Grand Valley scored the next nine points on a Jon Pena decision (7-5) over Hiatt in the 145-pound bout and a Carlos Flores pin against Peebles at 152.

The two teams traded pins at 160 and 170 with the Bulldogs getting the win at 160 with Wade Katzdorn's pin against Chance Taylor and the Cardinals' Levi Nolan coming back with a pin against Kaden Murray Owens in the 170-pound division.

The Bulldogs won the last four matches beginning at 182 with Parker Katzdorn's 6-4 win over Mike Kelly, a Kevin Chavez forfeit win (195), Devin Curtis' win (220) over Evan Hoft (Injury-time) and Nault's forfeit win at 285.

Hotchkiss hosts Olathe on Wednesday, Jan. 18, for wrestling action beginning at 6 p.m. and is scheduled to host a meet with Meeker and Norwood (5, 6 and 7 p.m.) on Friday, Jan. 20. The Bulldogs close the week at Paonia on Saturday for tournament action.
