Hotchkiss' Bulldogs played a pair of basketball games this past week, beginning with Caprock Academy on Jan. 6.
Hotchkiss' girls left little doubt as to who the winner was going to be with a 27-0 sprint through the first quarter of play. With double-digit figures in each of the four quarters, Hotchkiss finished the game with 74 points while its defense allowed just 11 points for their opponents.
The Bulldog boys were as successful as their counterparts and outpointed Caprock's boys 73-38.
On Saturday, Hotchkiss' girls fell to Plateau Valley's Cowboys by a 44-39 decision. The Bulldog boys also stumbled in Collbran and lost a 67-57 battle against the Cowboys.
Bulldogs 74, Eagles 11
The 27-0 romp in the first quarter was more than enough to score a win against Caprock Academy last Friday night. The Bulldogs were doing everything right and sophomore Carson Collins did her part in helping Hotchkiss win. She poured in a career high 29 points in the win and pulled down eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Collins got plenty of help, offensively, with Kaiya Firor chipping in 11 points with Kaleigh Little and Josie Hiatt netting 10 points each for the winners.
Hotchkiss led 35-5 at halftime and cleared its bench in the second half and still generated 36 more points for a 74-11 win.
Cowboys 44, HHS 39
The Bulldogs' offensive firepower wasn't as prolific as it was against Caprock on Friday night. Plateau Valley wasn't a ball of fire either but led 9-5 after the first period had ended.
Hotchkiss took a 16-15 halftime lead with an 11-point effort in the second quarter.
The Cowboys held a two-point lead at the end of the third period and added another three points with an 18-15 fourth quarter.
Firor was Hotchkiss' leading scorer against the Cowboys with 17 points and Collins finished with eight points. Lacey Rodriguez was next with seven points.
Hotchkiss fell to 4-5 with the loss and is even at 1-1 in 2A WSL District 5 play.
Bulldogs 73, Eagles 38
Hotchkiss had control of the Caprock game from the start with a 21-9 first quarter. An even better second period produced a 20-3 run for a halftime lead of 41-12.
The Bulldogs' bench saw considerable time in the second half and their offense cooled off a bit. Still, the Bulldogs controlled the second half of play with a 32-26 point advantage to win going away, 73-38.
Game statistics for the Bulldogs were not available.
Drew Van Schaick and Aaron Dollar had 14 points each for the Eagles.
