Monte Vista's Pirates came into last week's contest against Hotchkiss with a 1-1 record and in third place behind Center, 3-0, and Dolores, 2-1.
The Pirates' win elevated Monte Vista's record to 2-1 and it remains in third place in the 1A Southern Peaks League.
Hotchkiss, after losing its third straight game, is 1-3 in the 1A WSL and rests in fourth place behind Paonia, 3-0, Cedaredge, 3-0 and Meeker, 1-2.
Monte Vista took a 15-7 lead to the second quarter and added a Parker Randolph field goal for an 18-7 lead at halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, leaving the Pirates ahead by 11, 18-7.
Each team scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with the Bulldogs shaving a point off the Pirates' lead after converting their two-point attempt for eight points to make the final score 25-15.
The Bulldogs picked up 72 yards through the air on 6-of-11 passing from Colton Deluzio. Hotchkiss' ground game rolled up 188 yards on 39 carries.
Kale Litzelman had 80 yards on 13 carries, with teammate Wade Katzdorn rushing 20 times for 70 yards.
The Pirates were also stronger with their running game with 260 yards on 53 attempts. The passing game was good for just 16 yards with two completions in four attempts.
Hotchkiss' defense was anchored by Litzelman's 13 tackles with help from Cameron Matus and Colton Peebles' nine tackles each. Michael Valdez led the Pirates with 19 tackles and Brock Martin was next with 16.
The Bulldogs will have yet another stiff test Oct. 2, when they travel to Cedaredge to take on the streaking Bruins. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
