Wayne Troy Toombs, longtime Delta resident, died Sept. 30, 2017, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 69.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
He was born Aug. 5, 1948, to Alton and Montrue (Marable) Toombs in Cedarvale, N.M. When he was eight years old he moved to Delta to live with his aunt and uncle, Rebecca and Thomas Colbaugh. He spent his childhood and attended school in Delta, graduating from Delta High School in 1966. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War.
Mr. Toombs worked as a surveyor with the Forest Service and as a coal miner before becoming a licensed water operator for Colorado Water and Waste Water facility. He was a lifetime member of Delta Elks Lodge #1235, and enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and reading.
He is survived by his mother, Montrue Marable; aunt and uncle, Rebecca and Thomas Colbaugh; son, Travis (Danielle) Toombs; grandchildren, Trinity and Kayson Toombs; cousin/sister, Karen (Leslie) Pagone; sisters, Brenda Toombs and Nelda Issac; and a brother, Bruce (Judilyn) Toombs.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alton Toombs; and his brother, Zane Toombs.

On Dec. 4 Delta County Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes denied the application of Paonia Holdings, LLC for a change of land use for the property at 41322 Highway 133, with an adjacent residence at 41402 Highway 133 and an ancillary property at 16180 Stevens Gulch Road.
The property is owned by Bowie Resources, LLC, and was formerly used as a coal load-out site.
