News Delta County planners okay Bowie waste disposal pile Published March 7, 2007 Bowie Resources on Feb. 22 received a recommended approval from the Delta County Planning Commission for plans to create a new, 25-acre mine waste disposal pile (GOB pile). Company representative Bill Bear said the company-owned site of the proposed GOB pile is between mile markers 13 and 14 on Highway 133 east of Paonia. The parcel will have up to 670,000 cubic yards of mine waste material delivered to it by conveyor. According to the company’s specific development application for the project, “The pile should have a life of two to five years based on average coal mine waste generated from the preparation plant and the projected underground mining conditions. The maximum height between the toe of the proposed fill and its ultimate top is approximately 65 feet. “Final reclamation will include 40,000 cubic yards of cover material and 60,000 cubic yards of topsoil, and removal of the conveyor. Revegetation will be a pasture seed mix utilized on the slopes and top of the coal mine waste disposal area. Irrigated hay land seed mix will be utilized on the remaining area.” The site currently contains a small orchard, Bear said. In other business at its Feb. 22 meeting, the Delta County Planning commission recommended approval with staff recommendations for the following minor subdivisions: • McCarville minor subdivision, applicant/owners Peter McCarville and Elizabeth Skelton.
