Alan D. Benson of Hotchkiss died Aug. 23, 2017, at Paonia Care Center. He was 93.
He was born Jan. 9, 1924, to Julius and Florence (Evans) Benson in Denmark, Ohio. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1941 and joined the Army Air Force in 1942. He was a tech sergeant who worked as a mechanic on P-38 aircraft. He was stationed in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He returned home after being discharged in September 1945. He then enrolled at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, and graduated on June 11, 1949.
On June 12, 1949, he married Dolores Hanger at the Prospect Presbyterian Church in Ashtabula, Ohio. They owned and operated a dairy farm for 19 years in Jefferson, Ohio, before moving to Hotchkiss in June 1968.
Mr. Benson operated a small farm on Rogers Mesa while working at the Hawk's Nest Mine in Somerset. He also worked in road construction for years.
He was a lifelong baseball fan; he once attended a major league baseball game that featured Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Mr. Benson played baseball and helped coach the teams his sons played on. He also enjoyed football, reading, music and spending time with family.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dolores; children, Debbie (Roger) Hass, Randy (Mia) Benson, Brian (Diana) Benson, Marna (Gary) Godwin and Craig Benson; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert and Frank; and one sister, Phyllis.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Noel and Jack.
A celebration of life was held Aug. 26 at Rogers Mesa Community House.
