PEO Chapter BK is pleased to award Kayla Sanders with this year's Alice Penick Memorial Nursing Scholarship. The $500 was given to Sanders at Delta-Montrose Technical College. Kayla plans to complete her LPN training in May 2016, pass the state licensure boards, continue on to the RN program through Colorado Mesa University where she hopes to graduate with an associate degree, and then work toward a B.S. in nursing. Currently, besides her classes in the LPN program at DMTC, Sanders works at Montrose Memorial Hospital on the med-surg floor as a CNA and unit coordinator, as well as a telemetry technician in the ICU.
The scholarship was first awarded in December 2013 to honor the memory of Alice Penick. She was a member of PEO Chapter BK and several other community organizations. She also was instrumental in starting the hospice program in Grand Junction in the 1970s and was a former member of the advisory board for Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado.
At their March 5 meeting Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes made two appointments to the county planning commission. Steve Shea was reappointed for a three-year term.
