At the 2017 Class 2A State Track and Field Meet, Hotchkiss senior Zack Allen topped off a four-year career in the high jump with a silver medal after clearing the bar at 6 feet, 2 inches. Allen placed eighth as a sophomore and seventh as a junior.
In shot put junior Darrin Young took silver with a throw of 47 feet, 7.75 inches.
The boys team placed 12th out of 43 teams with 22.5 points.
The 4x800 team of Allen, Gabe Rodriguez, Myles Zouette and Sam Rodriguez placed fourth with a time of 8:37.48. "It wasn't our best time of the season, but we ran as hard as we could," said Allen.
The 4x200m team of sophomores George Arroyo and Cesar Camacho and freshmen Malykai Klaseen and Jace Peebles finished with a time of 1:39.46, and the 4x400 team of Sam Rodriguez, Colton Peebles, Gabe Rodriguez and Allen ran a season-best time of 3:39.11.
In individual events, in a race that saw the state meet record broken, junior Sam Rodriguez medaled in the 800-meter run with a ninth-place time of 2:00.16. Rodriguez also competed in the 1600m run.
In 300m hurdles junior Colton Peebles placed ninth with a time of 42.74.
The seventh annual Eckert Crane Days, the annual viewing of the sandhill cranes migrating north from New Mexico through Colorado's West Slope, will be March 16-18. Representatives from the Black Canyon Chapter of the Audubon Society (BCAS) will be at the viewing site east of Eckert at Fruitgrowers Reservoir, 9 to 11 a.m. each day, to answer questions and provide binoculars and spotting scopes.
