Ames 14th at Battle Mountain Huskey Meet

Delta High School was not able to run at Devil's Thumb last week but did make the Battle Mountain Husky Invitational on Sept. 3.

The Panthers finished fifth in the boys' race with 161 points. Battle Mountain was the meet winner with 55 points followed by Mead High School (67), Eagle Valley High School (76) and Palisade High School (92).

Paonia finished in sixth place with 162 points.

A total of 11 teams participated in the Saturday meet.

Battle Mountain scored 27 points to win the girls division hands down. Steamboat Springs and Eagle Valley finished a distant second with scores of 72. Paonia was seventh (182) and Delta placed ninth (257) in the 10-team field.

The boys individual title went to Soroco High School's Ben Kelley with his time of 18:35.

Sophomore John Ames was Delta County's top placer with his 14th place finish, and 13 points, in 20:36. Joining Ames in the scoring were freshman Garrison Paniagua (20th place and 18 points), freshman Shad Lewis (39th place, 37 points), junior Logan Freed (46th place, 44 points) senior Elias Carlson (51st place, 49 points).

For the girls, Delta sophomore Beki Atchley was the first Panther to cross the finish line in a time of 26:42. Other Delta runners figuring in the scoring included junior Anha Richards (56th, 52 points), freshman Hana Hollenbeck (62nd, 57 points), sophomore Ashtain Turner (65th, 60 points) and junior Amanda Fuller (67th, 62 points).

Delta's harriers are at the Hotchkiss Invitational on Sept. 10. Events begin at 9 a.m. south of Hotchkiss High Schools football field.
