Delta High School's cross country teams have steadily improved this season and times have come down.
Last week's Sweitzer Lake Invitational produced some good times for Delta runners. One of the best was John Ames' 16:58.91 in the boys race. Ames has a better time this season but finished fourth in a field of 86 runners at Sweitzer. "I wasn't pleased with my time. It should have been better," stated Ames.
One of Ames' goals is to get down to times in the middle 16-minute mark for the upcoming regional cross country meet held at Confluence Park in a couple of weeks.
Freshman Aubree Andre was Delta's first female runner to cross the finish line. She finished seventh in a field of 54 runners with a time of 21:29.60. Andre noted, "I picked it up on the back stretch and had one of the better races."
A key to Andre's success this season has been her off-season workouts in the summer. She ran two to three miles almost every day and participated in a few 5k runs as well. A goal for Andre is to be in the low 21-minute mark (or better). She also acknowledged the fact she would not be where she is today without the guidance of coach Lopez and the other coaches.
Shad Lewis had a top 15 run for the Panthers with a 12th place finish in a time of 17:50.66.
The remaining top five runners for Delta's boys included Neil Thomas (31st; 18:59.13), Issac Vader (40th; 19:38.78) and Andrew Toole (53rd; 20:39.14).
For the girls, Beki Atchley was a top 10 placer with a ninth place time of 21:43.93; Grace Hall was 13th in 22:21.52; Abby Williams was 20th at 23:18.16 and Emma Corbasson had a time of 24:48.62 for a 38th place finish.
