Bruins earn 2A state berth

The Cedaredge girls' basketball team will return to Pueblo for the second straight year as a contestant in the 2016 2A State Basketball Tournament.

Cedaredge has two losses on its record and both of those setbacks came at the hands of Paonia High School.

Paonia boys state bound

An error in last week's DCI had the Paonia boys losing only to Hotchkiss earlier in the season, when, in fact, Grand Valley's Cardinals should have been given that victory. Grand Valley handed the Eagles their only loss of the season to date, a 60-49 decision on Dec. 19 in Parachute. Since that time, the Eagles are on a 17-game winning streak and have a 23-1 record.

Given the competition continues to rise as teams advance in playoff races, Paonia High School's Eagles used all that surrounds those contests to gain experience and momentum on their journey toward a state basketball title this week in Pueblo.

The Eagles continued their winning ways with two more victories in Rifle over opponents in the 2A Region 3 tournament.

The mayoral contest in Orchard City for this year's municipal election has incumbent trustee Ken Volgamore going up against former trustee Jan Gage.

Gage is a former trustee who also served as mayor pro-tem.
