Delta County grapplers represent at Warrior

Central High School in Grand Junction held its yearly Warrior Classic last weekend, the biggest early-season wrestling meet in Colorado.

Forty teams from three different states competed in the event, which draws the best wrestlers in every classification and serves as a pretty good preview of the state tournament in February.

This year's First Colorado National Bank basketball tournament began its sponsorship under the initial format of all four Delta County schools participating in a pre-Christmas tournament in Delta. In 1994, the tournament was known as the Bank of the West Basketball Tournament with all four schools in the county playing at Delta High School on two consecutive days (Thursday and Friday) before Christmas break began.

Two groups from Delta High School and three others have been named state finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, a competition that encourages students to solve issues in their community using science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) for a chance to win a share of $2 million in technology.

Valley families enjoyed the Christmas treat of the season last week as they trekked to Cedaredge Elementary four times to hear students present programs of holiday music under the direction of music instructor Andrea Kallsen.

The audiences filled the gym to capacity for performances by the combined fourth and fifth grades, the combined second and third grades, by the first graders, and by the kindergarten class.

On Oct. 27 Rick and Len Harner of Cedaredge set out on a trip to spend seven days in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, observing polar bears on land as the bears wait for the Hudson Bay to freeze over so they can return to ice.

Hudson Bay is famous for the seasonal migrations of polar bears.

The caring, giving heart of the Surface Creek Valley community beat strongly last Saturday as dozens of volunteers gathered at the food bank in Cedaredge with over 260 Christmas dinner gift boxes to distribute.

The annual project by the volunteers of the Surface Creek Community Services Food Bank adds some true holiday happiness to local families who receive the gift boxes.

I remember when I first moved to my new place in Cedaredge that I greatly appreciated the white flowering plants blanketing a slope on my property. Only after I was chastised by a neighbor for my insistence to perpetuate this beautiful sight did I come to realize these plants were in fact the much hated weed, whitetop.
