Delta moves on in 3A soccer

The Delta Panthers survived a torrid 80 minutes of physical exertion and overcame a determined Bayfield Wolverine soccer team in the opening round of this year's 3A state soccer championships. The match, played in Delta, was evenly matched for nearly 80 minutes of play.

A late-season arrival by freshman Tawny Roberts gave the Paonia cross country team what it needed to win this year's regional title, and a stellar performance by Paonia's top runners earned the team a second place finish and another piece of hardware for the trophy case.

Paonia to regionals at Meeker

The Paonia volleyball team will travel to Meeker this week to compete in the Region C tournament after placing third Saturday at the district tournament.

After opening Friday with a 3-1 district win over Plateau Valley, Paonia shocked third-seeded Vail Mountain with a three-set, 26-24, 25-22, 25-23 win, eliminating Vail from the tournament and guaranteeing the Eagles a regional playoff berth.

The return of the Delta County Fair's annual Demolition Derby last August following a three-year absence attracted 15 entries, large crowds, and a very unexpected new derby champion.

Madison Milner and her 1996 Subaru Outback decked out as a Minion from the "Despicable Me" movies outlasted all other vehicles, most made during the bygone era of solid steel muscle cars, to win the derby title and the $2,000 grand prize.

Don Paul Smith

Don was born June 13, 1919 in Burwell, Neb., to William Bruce and Anna Belle (Davis) Smith. Don's mother died in 1921 when he was only two years of age; he was cared for in the next 3-4 years by relatives in Nebraska.

Commission recommends denial of land use change
Commission recommends denial of land use change

Following a lengthy meeting on Oct. 25 on a proposed land use change under Delta County Specific Development Regulations, members of the Delta County Planning Commission (DCPC) and Upper North Fork Area Planning Committee (UNFAPC) voted 6-1 to recommend denial by the Board of County Commissioners. The application is to be considered by the county commissioners on Monday, Nov. 20.

Hotchkiss firefighters return from third national deployment

Through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, a state-to-state method of sharing resources, Hotchkiss firefighters have been deployed to Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon and California this year.

Recently, four crew members from the Hotchkiss Fire District helped with firefighting efforts in northern California.
