The Delta Senior Center is honored to display works of art by W. Richard "Dick" Doherty in the dining hall located at 247 Meeker Street. Doherty is a well-known artist and teacher who has played an important role in the development of the arts in this area.
Born in New York City, Doherty began drawing and painting at an early age. His career path directed him into ranching and animal husbandry and in the early '50s, he decided to come west to learn to be a cowboy. His love of outdoor life, working cattle, hunting, camping and the beauty of nature became a part of his experience and artistic expression.He never stopped drawing and painting his surroundings. His talents were noted by the community in Norwood and he was asked to become the school's art teacher. This was a turning point for the artist, and since that time he has earned a bachelor's and master's degree in fine arts. He was the art teacher at Delta High School from 1969 until 1988. He and his wife, Debbie, have maintained an active role in Delta County's artistic community and were instrumental in founding Delta Fine Arts.
Some special projects Doherty designed for the City of Delta include a 1976 bicentennial time capsule, 1982 Delta commemorative coin, the illustrations for "The First Hundred Years," a book about Delta, and the first mural in Delta titled "Delta County Ark" depicting the wildlife of the area. The murals of the "Hardware Store" and the "Anna Dora Opera House" near 3rd and Main were created more recently.
Doherty's paintings will be on display through the month of March. The Senior Center is open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday-Friday. The Thrift Shop in the center is open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Lunch is served at noon in the hall. Donation for lunch is $3 for those 60 years old and older, $8.40 for those younger.
On Dec. 4 Delta County Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes denied the application of Paonia Holdings, LLC for a change of land use for the property at 41322 Highway 133, with an adjacent residence at 41402 Highway 133 and an ancillary property at 16180 Stevens Gulch Road.
The property is owned by Bowie Resources, LLC, and was formerly used as a coal load-out site.
