A recent name change at the Cedaredge Assembly of God has folks talking, and that's a good thing. Pastor Bob Hillyer is excited to share what the True Life Church is all about and to extend an invitation to join the congregation in worship and outreach.
Pastor Bob says the name change was a subject of discussion for quite some time before the congregation voted unanimously in favor of the new name. Having been part of the process, he was surprised by the buzz it created. "It's our church, it's our name, we like it and we hope you will too," he tells folks who ask.
He explains the church has not changed its relationship with the Assemblies of God, but the church goes beyond a any particular denomination. "I think we're a lot more than that. We wanted a name that meant something."
Most of his church members, and even his staff, are not from an Assembly of God background. "I would consider us multidenominational," he said.
Pastor Bob Hillyer and his wife Debbie have served as senior pastors of True Life Church since January 1995. Previously, Pastor Phil Neely served the church for 18 years. "We've gone over 40 years with two lead pastors, which is pretty remarkable," he noted.
Dan and Jenni Neil are the church's youth pastors; Mark and Cynthia Tingley serve as children's pastors.
The church will continue to support Assembly of God missions, including an outreach to Mexico. True Life is also active in the community, serving a free barbecue for the Serenity Run, filling backpacks for 75 Cedaredge Elementary students, hosting trunk-or-treat on Halloween, and serving a Pearl Harbor dinner for local veterans. Santa and Mrs. Claus make an appearance at trunk-or-treat, handing out boxes to be filled for Operation Christmas Child. The boxes are collected during the church's annual Thanksgiving dinner. Two sewing groups meet weekly, one to make quilts for veterans and the other to sew bags, skirts and more projects for those in need in the community and around the world.
"We greatly enjoy partnering with service organizations in the community," Pastor Bob said. "We want to be looking out instead of in."
The church has a new website, tlcedaredge.org and a new sign, but its physical address and phone number are unchanged -- 1596 SW 9th Street; 856-3586. Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m.
