Delta's Panthers competed in last Saturday's Frank Woodburn Invitational at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction. Lily Lockhart and Emily Baier paced Delta's girls to seventh place and 54 points. Lockhart won the discus and was second in shot put while Baier recorded a win in triple jump.
Delta's boys got a second-place finish from Kory Mills in discus, and the Panthers scored 26 points to place ninth on Saturday.
The consistency of Lockhart in discus and shot put has led to major point contributions for the Panthers. Last Saturday was no different. The number of points was slightly off, with University's Belle Whyrick stealing the shot title with a 37-05 throw that was just two inches longer than Lockhart's.
Lockhart came back with a throw (137-05) to win by more than 25 feet over second place and 28 feet longer than Whyrick's throw.
Baier's first-place finish in triple jump helped the junior athlete move past a three-scratch day in long jump that left her out of the finals. Baier's 34-02.25 jump is not far from Class 4A's best jump of 36-0.
Emily Nortnik came up big again for Delta with a second-place finish in high jump after jumping 5-0 for the second straight week.
Delta's 800m sprint medley relay team also finished second with its time of 1:56.76. Members of that team included Nortnik and Baier along with Teona Martinez and Jaquiline Sandoval.
Beki Atchley, Baier, Mykayla Music and Nortnik combined efforts to place third in the 1600m relay with a time of 4:22.37.
Music placed fifth in the 400m dash, and the 400m relay team was seventh to complete scoring for the Panthers.
Delta's top scorer, individually, was Mills with 11 points. He was second in discus with a throw of 133-06 and placed sixth in shot put after a best throw of 43-01.
Jacob Wear ran the 800m confidently and finished the race with a time of 2:07.20.
Delta's 1600 and 3200m relay teams finished seventh and the 400 and 800m relay teams were seventh.
Delta was scheduled to take part in a track meet in Edwards on Tuesday, April 12, and won't have another meet until April 22 at Fruita.
