Ben Velasquez died at his home in Delta on Aug. 3, 2016. He was 93.
A rosary was held on Aug. 8 at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial was held on Tuesday, Aug. 9, with Father Albeiro Herrera-Ciro officiating. Interment followed at Mesa View Cemetery in Delta.
He was born in Sunnyside, Utah, on April 27, 1923, to Benseslado and Rosa (Lucero) Velasquez. He spent his childhood in Canyones, N.M.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with family, riding his bike, fixing things and walking outside.
He was preceded in death by a son, Harvey; four brothers, Joe, Mike, Levi and Tony; and one sister, Eva Gallegos.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Velasquez of Delta; two daughters, Lorraine (Ken) Kiser of Smithfield, Utah, and Berleen (Mark) Brewer of Grand Junction; one sister, Rosita Zufelt of Vernal, Utah; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

On Dec. 4 Delta County Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes denied the application of Paonia Holdings, LLC for a change of land use for the property at 41322 Highway 133, with an adjacent residence at 41402 Highway 133 and an ancillary property at 16180 Stevens Gulch Road.
The property is owned by Bowie Resources, LLC, and was formerly used as a coal load-out site.
