Big B's, the local organic juice company, received national attention at the 2016 Good Food Award. The North Fork-based company garnered medals for two of its hard ciders, Orchard Original and Pear Supply.

The annual Good Food Awards, presented Jan. 15 in San Francisco, recognizes outstanding American food producers and the farmers who provide their ingredients. Winners were selected from 1,927 entrants representing 242 companies from 33 states.

"We are absolutely thrilled to have Big B's Hard Cider recognized by the Good Food Awards," said head cider maker Shawn Larson. "What an absolute treat to meet Carlo Petrini, founder of Slow Food, Alice Waters and Nell Newman."

Big B's Juices was founded in 1973. Using 100 percent organic apples, they began making hard cider in 2010. Since then they have expanded their flavors to include pears, cherries and apricots.

Eleven Colorado companies representing a dozen products were honored at the awards. Avalanche Cheese Company, which is based in Basalt and operates its 130-acre goat dairy on Bone Mesa, won medals in the "charcuterie" category for its Pork and Goat Finocchiona and in the "cheese" category for its Hand Bandaged Cheddar & Cabra Blanca.

"I couldn't be more proud of all of the Colorado winners here and that Big Bs was welcomed into this group," said Larson.
