Bill Mathews Jr.
Austin resident William John "Bill" Mathews Jr. died May 28, 2017, at his home. He was 72.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Inurnment will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 19, at Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado in Grand Junction.
Mr. Mathews was born Aug. 26, 1944, to William and Elizabeth "Tommy" (Lord) Mathews in Rock Springs, Wyo. He spent his childhood and attended school in Baggs, Wyo.
After he graduated from high school, he served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged and worked as a meat cutter for 20 years. He went on to work for Meadow Gold, retiring after 20 years.
On Dec. 24, 1994, he married Katherine Kinne in Hotchkiss. They shared 22 years of marriage.
Mr. Mathews Jr. was a member of the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, tinkering in his shop, going to yard sales, playing darts, listening to country music, watching TV and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine "Kathy" Mathews; two daughters, Tanya Mathews (Ledford) and Kristina Mathews (Lozano) and husband, Victor; a brother, Wilford (Paula) Mathews; four sisters, Dorothy Golden, Josephine "Jo" (Reeves) Shaw, Marione (Bill) Sills and Cindy (Mike) Sherrer; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Mathews; and two brothers, Donald Mathews and James "Jimmy" Mathews.
