Billy Varner

Billy Gene Varner of Hotchkiss died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015. He was 88.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 23, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta.

Mr. Varner was born on Redlands Mesa Oct. 4, 1927, to David and Inez (Widner) Varner. He spent his childhood on the lower end of Redlands Mesa and attended school in Eckert, Cedaredge, Delta and Hotchkiss. He graduated in 1945.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1952. He was a lifelong resident of Redlands Mesa except for the years he was stationed in Korea.

He married Frances Hann Oct. 18, 1952, in Grand Junction.

Mr. Varner served on the Durkee Ditch board as well as the Overland Ditch board on which he was president for several years. He enjoyed farming, and coffee and pie with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances Varner; three sons, Stan Varner of Delta County, Phil (Debbie) Varner of Craig and Randy (Tonya) Varner of Redlands Mesa; two daughters, Kathy Scott of Mack and Virginia (Paul) Schranck of Durango; one sister, Gail Mohney of Fort Collins; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and extended family.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Elton Varner.

Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory is handling the arrangements.
