Classes in blacksmithing will begin on Monday, June 20, at the Pioneer Town Blacksmith Shop in Cedaredge.
Classes will be conducted by Pioneer Town's in-house blacksmith Paul Michaels, assisted by apprentice Ella Kelly. The classes are restricted to participation by women only.
There will be two sessions offered on Mondays: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., or 1 to 3 p.m.
These classes are designed for getting started and seeing what the old-time craft is about in a casual atmosphere. Participants may create their own projects and learn the basics of the art of the blacksmith: heating steel in a forge and shaping it with a hammer, anvil, and chisel.
Participants are advised to wear natural fiber clothing, (i.e., no polyester), along with closed toe shoes. Long hair should be tied back. If participants have goggles and leather gloves, bring them along, otherwise the Blacksmith Shop has a few to loan.
The course of about four classes costs $40. Materials are included. Class sizes are limited to five, and registration is required. The number to call to sign up is 970-210-7313.
