The Cedaredge Bruins didn't make the 3A district tournament held at Central High School this past week. A 64-43 loss to first seed Coal Ridge in a quarterfinal game Feb. 19 seemed to be the final game for the Bruins. But, the selection committee had the Bruins (9-12) listed at 31 and penned them in to play this Friday evening at 6 p.m. against the 3A second-seeded Alamosa Maroons (18-3).
Cedaredge had Coal Ridge's number in first quarter play and outscored the Titans 13-10 in the game's first eight minutes of action.
The high-powered Titans were in a groove in second quarter play and took a halftime lead (29-18) on a 19-5 run. Cedaredge kept the score within reach in the third quarter by scoring three more points than the Titans to trail 44-36 with one quarter left to play.
Coal Ridge earned the top seed in 3A WSL play by having a potent offense and solid defense. The Titans went on a 20-7 fourth quarter run sealing a 64-43 win over Cedaredge.
Peter Carlson led the Bruins' offense with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Jacob Lewis finished the game with 11 points.
Kevin DiMarco was Coal Ridge's, and the game's, leading scorer with 20 points. DiMarco added seven rebounds for the game as well.
Other double-figure scorers for the Titans included Jan Hernandez (12) and Brandon Herrera finished with 11 points.
Cedaredge coach Craig Cerise was asked if he was surprised with his team's selection to play in the opening round of 32. "No, I wasn't surprised that we got in because we had a strong strength of schedule. The kids are excited and we know we have a tough opponent ahead of us, but we're going to do our best to make the most of the opportunity and see if we can get a big upset."
The Bruins will travel to Alamosa to play in the opening round of the 3A state tournament which begins March 2 with regional pairings in eight locations around the state. Joining the Bruins and Alamosa this weekend are 15th seed Grand Valley (17-5) and 18th seed Colorado Springs Christian (15-7). Winners of the March 2 game will play on Saturday, March 3, to move into the Sweet 16 round.
Sweet 16 winners advance to Denver University (Hamilton Gym) to play in the Great 8 (March 8) with hopes of landing berths in the Final Four (March 9) and a shot at the state 3A title March 10.
