The Cedaredge Bruins have a big week of play coming up in District 5 WSL tournament action. The Bruins had a quarterfinal-round game against West Grand on Tuesday, Feb. 23. The winner of that contest moved on to this weekend's semifinal and championship rounds in De Beque on Feb. 26-27.
In the last week of regularly scheduled games, Cedaredge's girls rolled over the visiting Caprock Academy Eagles, 97-16, on Saturday.
There was no doubt as to who would win this contest after a 28-6 first-quarter run by the Bruins. Senior Nellie Freeman seared the net for 18 points in the opening frame. Freeman spread another 16 points over the remaining three quarters of play to finish with a career-high 34 points.
A 22-3 effort in the second quarter lifted the Bruins to a 50-9 halftime lead.
Cedaredge came close to matching its first-quarter point production in a 26-5 sprint in the third quarter. In the period, Kendall McHugh netted eight points to lead the way and Freeman added another seven. McHugh went on to finish with 18 points in the game for the Bruins.
Cedaredge's defense continued to apply some token pressure in the fourth quarter and limited the Eagles to just five points. Meanwhile, everyone on Ryan Hilbig's bench contributed time in a 21-2 run to finish the game. All 12 Bruins scored at least two points in the game.
Cedaredge finished the regular season with the best District 5 overall record at 18-1. Paonia had a 17-2 record as did Soroco. Both Cedaredge and Paonia were 11-1 in league play while Soroco was 9-1.
The Bruins hosted West Grand (16-3 and 7-3) on Tuesday. Results from that game will be posted in next week's paper. A victory in that game sends the winner to this weekend's play.
