Bruin hardball team 4-3

By Wayne Crick

The Cedaredge Bruin baseball team continues its early season battles with upper division schools and is gaining valuable experience along the way. Last week's matchups included a rematch with Eagle Valley (a team the Bruins lost to, 3-1). Even though the results were the same, each team scored more runs with a two-run margin (7-5) the difference once again.

Saturday's trip to Monte Vista for doubleheader play was much different. Cedaredge won the first game 18-4 with Jacob Lewis spinning an 18-4 gem in 5.2 innings of work where he allowed six hits and struck out 11 batters. Brayden Blair came in to get the last out and recorded the team's 12th strikeout.

Chris Lindley was on the hill in the second game and allowed just one hit and one walk in a 15-0 win for Cedaredge.

A 2-0 lead after the first inning didn't last long and the 4A Devils eased to the front for a 3-2 lead after three innings.

A scoreless fourth kept the score at 3-2. The top of the fifth produced two runs for Cedaredge and a 4-3 lead going to the bottom of the inning.

Eagle Valley had a big inning and plated four runs to steal the game with a 7-5 decision.

Brandon O'Hern was big for the Bruins through the week. He was 2-2 against the Devils with a double; 3-4 against Monte Vista with an RBI in game one and 3-3 with a double, home run and five RBIs in game two with the Pirates.

Kaden Schulz was productive against Eagle Valley with a double and two RBIs and Lewis had a double in two at bats with an RBI.

Chase Meyers drove in one run with a hit in four trips to the plate.

Lindley's stint on the mound was also productive as the Bruins rolled past Monte Vista on a smart piece of pitching and a good defense. Lindley kept Monte Vista batters off balance with a variety of pitches and recorded nine strikeouts in the win.

Cedaredge hitters continued to pound the ball and out hit the Pirates 11-1 in a game featuring seven runs by the Bruins in the seventh inning alone.

Meyers had a 2-3 day which included a double and two RBIs. Meyers also scored three runs for the Bruins. Schulz was 2-4 with three runs scored and an RBI and Lewis' triple plated two runs. Labossiere had a double and two RBIs for the winners. In all, Cedaredge had five extra base hits in the game.

Cedaredge won't get much time to relax as it is scheduled to face Hotchkiss on April 4 in Cedaredge at 4 p.m. The Bruins will have their hands full with Hotchkiss, a team that hung a 2-1 loss on Delta's Panthers on March 27 in Delta.

The Bruins will finish next week with a home contest on Saturday against Moffat County's Bulldogs beginning at 11 a.m.
