Bruin hoopsters stay busy

The Cedaredge Bruins' basketball teams have gotten off to a successful start in 2016-17.

The Bruin girls are 3-1 on the season and the boys match that record.

An opening weekend of hoops in Meeker for Cedaredge's girls ended with a 2-1 slate. The Bruins defeated Rangely, 46-34, lost to Soroco, 38-42, and then beat Meeker 42-35 in their last game.

Cedaredge rolled past Ridgway on Tuesday, Dec. 6, with a 68-28 final score.

The Bruin boys began their week with a 65-31 win over Ridgway and then headed to Meeker for the White River Shootout. A tough Fruita Monument junior varsity team raced past the Bruins, 71-41, in first round play. A win over Hayden, 66-22, was next ending the weekend with a 79-33 win over Soroco.

Bruins 46, Rangely 34

Cedaredge began its tournament in Meeker with Rangely.

First half action was even, and low scoring, with each team canning 17 points.

Play in the second half improved for Cedaredge with the Bruins outscoring Rangely 29-17 to account for the 46-34 final score.

Senior Hannah Gilmore led the way, followed by Courtney Freeman's nine points.

Soroco 42, Bruins 38

The Bruins started well enough and built a 13-6 lead heading to the second quarter. Soroco began turning the tables in the second period with an 8-4 run and trailed 14-17 at halftime.

The game was tied at 28 all at the end of the third quarter. Cedaredge could not stay with the Rams in the final period and managed just 10 points to the 14 scored by Soroco.

Gilmore had an 11-point game with seven rebounds.

Bruins 42, Meeker 35

Cedaredge started strong in this game but had to hold on in the second half for the win.

The Bruins built a 27-14 halftime lead that quickly vanished in the third period following a Cowboy 16-7 run to make the score 34-30 with one quarter left to play.

Cedaredge had just enough offense in the last frame to secure the 42-35 win.

Freeman took center stage, offensively, with 15 points and played well in all phases of the game. Gilmore's 14 points was next high for Cedaredge.

Bruins 68, Demons 28

Cedaredge hosted Ridgway on Dec. 6 for a non-league encounter.

Cedaredge ran rough-shod over Ridgway and bolted to a 24-1. The game was never in doubt after that.

Gilmore's 16 points topped the Bruins' offense with teammates Henrie and Grace Andrews adding 12 point each.

The Bruins face Hotchkiss in opening round play of the First Colorado National Bank tournament on Friday at 3 p.m.

Cedaredge Boys
Bruins 65, Demons 31

Cedaredge opened its week with a non-league contest against Ridgway on Dec. 6. Peter Carlson and Christian Reynolds shared team scoring honors with 16 points each in the win.

Isaac Swoffer and Jared Reynolds finished with 10 points each for the Bruins.

Meeker Tournament
FM JV 71, Bruins 41

Their opening round game against Fruita Monument's junior varsity was a tough one for the Bruins.

The Wildcats played solid defense and had scorers who found the bottom of the net often in the game.

Christian Reynolds finished as Cedaredge's top scorer with 12 points.

Carlson chipped in 11 points while Jared Reynolds finished with seven points.

Bruins 66, Hayden 22

Cedaredge was in control of its second game of the White River Shootout from the start and led Hayden's Tigers 32-12 at halftime.

The Bruins ran away with the game in the second half and did not allow the Tigers any points in the fourth quarter.

Carlson's 17 points led the Bruins offense followed by Christian Reynolds (14) and Daniel Roberts (10).

Bruins 79, Soroco 33

The hot-shooting Bruins scored 24 points in the first quarter, 33 in the second and 20 in the third, taking a 77-27 lead to the fourth quarter.

Christian Reynolds topped Bruins' scorers with 15 points followed by Carlson (13) and Lewis with 10 points.

Cedaredge plays Hotchkiss first in this year's First Colorado National Bank tournament beginning on Friday. Game time for the Bruins and Bulldogs is 4:30 p.m.

The winner faces either Delta or Paonia for the title on Saturday with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. Losers play Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
