Cedaredge High School's softball team won two of three games played this past week. The Bruins cruised past Gunnison, 11-3, on Oct. 3 and played a doubleheader against Gunnison Oct. 6. The Cowboys won the first game 22-16 and Cedaredge earned a split with its 14-3 win in game two.
Cedaredge never trailed against Gunnison taking a 4-0 lead into the fourth inning. The Cowboys scored two runs in the top of the fourth but came out of the inning trailing 8-2 after Cedaredge rallied for four runs in the bottom half of the fourth.
The Bruins added two more runs in the fifth and each team scored once in the sixth to make the final score 11-3.
Neveah Martinez had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Bruins with Emalee Brooks picking up a double and two RBIs. Kambry Hall had three hits, including a double, and an RBI while Josie Hiatt banged a double to pick up an RBI.
Gunnison's Britt Propernick and Shannon Murphy had three hits each for the Cowboys.
Summer Young earned the win for Cedaredge and Gunnison's Kyla Engleman took the loss.
Against Cortez in game one, Katie Hyke enjoyed a great day at the plate with a double and a triple helping her with four hits and five RBIs. Hannah Gardner had three hits, all doubles, and finished with two RBIs for the Bruins.
Young and Hiatt (with a double) finished the day with two hits each and two RBIs. Unfortunately for Cedaredge, its 16-hit day was overshadowed by Cortez's 20-hit performance.
Cortez's Alexis Cornett was four-for-six with a double and home run for a four-RBI day. Hanna Molzahn had three hits, including a double, and knocked in three runs. Alyssa Cornett used a double in two hits to receive credit for another three runs driven in for the Panthers.
Each team was hitting the ball well with both teams scoring four runs in the first inning. Cedaredge kept its bats warm into the second inning and plated another five runs for a 9-4 lead. The Panthers failed to score in their half of the inning and Cedaredge took that 9-4 lead to the third inning.
The Bruins added two more runs to their totals and seemed to be comfortably in control with an 11-4 lead. Cortez erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 12-11 lead going to the fourth inning.
Cedaredge recaptured the lead with a single run in the top of the fourth. It would be the Bruins' last lead of the game. Cortez put up a five-spot in the bottom of the fourth to take a 17-12 lead.
Each team scored once in the fifth and the Bruins added one more in the sixth and two in the seventh for a final total of 16. Cortez's four-run sixth put the game away.
Game two was more to the Bruins' liking after a three-run start in the first inning.
Cortez's bats went cold in this game as its offense managed just one run in the second inning and two more in the fourth. The Bruins continued to add runs to their total with two in the second, seven in the third and two more in the fourth. Cortez failed to score in the fifth ending the game via the 10-run rule, 14-3.
Hiatt added another four RBIs to her total for the doubleheader giving her five hits, three doubles and six RBIs for the twin bill. Hall had two hits, with a double, and two RBIs (four RBIs for the day) while teammates Martinez and Brooks added two RBIs each in the win for the Bruins.
Young limited Cortez batters to just four hits in the game on her way to the win.

Delta (No. 13) plays Saturday in Region 4, hosted by Lamar (No. 4; 14-5), against Lyons, No. 20 (6-13) at 12:15 p.m. The winner plays Lamar for a playoff berth in state tournament play.
