Last week's Cedaredge (3A) homecoming week softball action included a big win over Meeker (3A) and a pair of losses in games with Delta (3A) and Rifle (4A).

The Bruins hosted Meeker, and won 7-5, on Tuesday (Sept. 12). Delta had to come from behind in the seventh inning to defeat the Bruins 9-7 on Thursday, Sept. 14. Rifle came from a 2-0 deficit to post a 9-5 win on Friday.

Bruins 7, Meeker 5

Cedaredge eased its way to a 2-0 lead over Meeker at the Field of Dreams. The Cowboys pulled to within one after scoring once in the third inning but fell back two more runs on a two-run fifth for the Bruins.

A three-run sixth inning produced Cedaredge's final run production of the game giving the Bruins seven runs.

Meeker finished strong with a four-run seventh and its fifth run of the game.

Junior Hannah Gardner and senior Josie Hiatt collected two hits each for the Bruins. Gardner had two RBIs and Hiatt scored three times.

Junior Emalee Brooks was 1-4 with two RBIs and sophomore Summer Young scored twice, had one hit and knocked in one run.

Young was the winning pitcher with seven innings of work and seven strikeouts.

Delta 9, Bruins 7

Delta scored its first run of the game on a throwing error in the first inning.

With threatening skies above, the Panthers collected four hits and a pair of walks which generated three runs in the top of the second inning. Senior Breanna Sprout, juniors Sami Lane, Ashley Lahoe and Jenna Sutliff all reached base on singles. Freshmen Keely Porter and Hailee Ruble reached base on walks. Lahoe's single scored Sprout, Sutliff's single scored Porter and the walk to Ruble scored Lane.

The game was stopped in the second inning for a brief time due to a hard rain.

After resuming play, Cedaredge picked up back-to-back singles from seniors Katie Hyke and Kambry Hall. Junior Nicole Miller's sacrifice fly to right field scored Hyke to make the score 4-1 heading to the third inning.

Neither team scored in the third inning.

Ruble, Delta's starting pitcher, ran into trouble in the fourth inning. Some of her woes weren't her doing as the Panthers committed three errors which were converted into runs for the Bruins. Ruble issued a pair of walks which also contributed a run.

Brooks was issued a walk to start the bottom of the fourth. Gardner flew out to right field and Hyke reached base on an error. Hall stroked an RBI single scoring Hyke, and Miller reached base on an error. Shelby Stone drew a walk and Elle Lewis reached on an error.

With four runs already in, Delta coach Jerry Sandoval switched pitchers after Lewis' at bat. Lane replaced Ruble in the circle.

A single off the bat of Hiatt plated Lewis and finished Bruins' scoring in the inning giving Cedaredge a 6-4 lead.

A scoreless fifth inning sent the game to the sixth.

The Panthers got hits from Lahoe and Sutliff before Ruble flew out to center field for Delta's first out. Alyssa Trujillo's single drove in Lahoe, and Sutliff scored on a passed ball. Later in the inning, Trujillo scored on another passed ball making it possible for the Panthers to take a 7-6 lead.

Cedaredge's Hall singled to reach base and worked her way around the bases to eventually score on a passed ball to tie the game at 7-7.

Delta started the seventh with a double from pinch-hitter Eloise Norfleet. Porter followed with a single and Lane walked to load the bases. Lahoe's fielder's choice brought Norfleet home and a single from Sutliff plated Porter to give the Panthers a 9-7 lead.

Cedaredge had a three-up and a three-down seventh to end the game.

Hall paced Cedaredge hitters with two hits, scored twice and had an RBI.

Delta's leading hitters included Sutliff with three hits, scored a run and knocked in three runs. Lahoe was equally impressive with her three hits, a run scored and three RBIs. Trujillo finished with two hits, including a double, scored a run and had an RBI. Norfleet was one-for-one with a double and a run scored.

Lane was the winning pitcher and Young took the loss.

Next week's play begins in Gunnison on Sept. 26 with a 4 p.m. start time.

The Bears led 2-0 in the top of the second but trailed 3-2 after Cedaredge had taken its swings.

Things changed drastically in the top of the fourth with Rifle putting a six-spot on the scoreboard to take an 8-3 lead. A single run by the Bruins in the bottom of the inning made it 8-4.

Each team scored one more run to make the final score 9-5.
