Cedaredge sent a handful of athletes to the Coal Ridge Invitational on Friday and then followed up with a trip to Gunnison on Saturday for a weekend of track competition. Hotchkiss' Bulldogs were in New Castle with their full team but did not attend Saturday's combined college/high school meet in Gunnison on Saturday.
Cedaredge's Katie Hyke and Hotchkiss' Mae Anderson recorded first-place wins on the girls' side at the afternoon meet. Cedaredge's Patrick Walker and Hotchkiss' Cameron Matus placed first in discus and shot put, respectively.
The Bulldogs, behind Anderson's top finish in the 3200m run, finished with 53 points to place fifth in New Castle.
Anderson had a time of 12:49.22 to win the grueling eight-lap race. The Hotchkiss senior is ranked fifth in Class 2A in the 1600m run with her time of 5:41.73 but is not in the top 18 in the 3200m. Anderson placed second in the 1600m in New Castle with a time of 5:41.88, just off her qualifying time.
Anderson is also qualified (eighth) for state in the 800m run with a time of 2:32.34.
The Bulldogs' Mariah Griffith ran to an eighth-place finish in the 3200m while teammate Katy Parsons placed third in the 1600m (5:57.24) and helped the Bulldogs place second in the 800m sprint medley relay, which has a Class 2A state qualifying time of 1:57.09 that ranks them sixth. Other members of the relay team are Yasmine Gaub, Fatima Rodriguez, Jordan Tamayo and Sophia Schelle.
Parsons is also qualified for state in the 400m (eighth-1:00.45) and 800m (fourth-2:27.51).
Hotchkiss' 800m relay team recorded a time of 1:55.21 at Coal Ridge to finish second. Members of the team include Gaub, Parsons, Rodriguez and Schelle. The 1:55.21 vaulted the Bulldogs all the way from 26th to 12th in Class 2A 800m relay standings.
Gaub placed fifth in 300m hurdles and was a member of the sixth-place 1600m relay team.
Eighth-place points went to Hotchkiss' Mykayla Helm in long jump.
Katie Hyke swept the throwing events (shot put and discus) to lead Bruins' scoring. Hyke won the discus with a throw of 103-10 and had a toss of 36-07.5 to win the shot put. Hyke is currently ranked eighth in 2A discus with a throw of 113-2 and second in shot put with a throw of 39-0.
Grace Andrews placed fourth in discus.
The Bruins were ninth in team competition with 25 points.
Matus' winning shot put throw was 41-06 at the Coal Ridge Invitational and he placed seventh in discus.
Elijah Patrick cleared 5-08.5 in high jump and Sam Rodriguez ran an 11:11.99 in the 3200m for second places at the Coal Ridge meet. Rodriguez also placed sixth in the 1600m race.
Zack Allen cleared the high jump bar with the same numbers as Patrick (5-08.5) but finished third due to more misses. Allen is third in 2A standings with his best jump of 6-1.
Other individual state qualifiers for the Bulldogs include an 11th place for Darrin Young in shot put, with his best effort of 43-3 in Glenwood Springs earlier in the season.
The Bulldogs' 800m relay team finished fifth while the 400m relay team placed eighth.
Hotchkiss finished fourth (47 points) in the team race.
A young Cedaredge track team scored 29 points to finish 10th at the Coal Ridge Invitational last week.
Patrick Walker's first-place finish in discus was the highlight for Cedaredge. His throw of 125-04 earned him the top spot. Teammate Xander Purcell placed fifth in the event.
Cedaredge's finish in shot put netted it third, fourth and fifth place points. Tyler Reynolds was third (40-08), Purcell fourth (39-10.5) and Austin Meyers fifth (38-05).
All Delta County high school teams will attend Friday's Montrose Invitational starting at 10 a.m.
