There was tension and some nervous moments after Cedaredge High School's softball team failed to win its first game of the day last Saturday. Brush High School had just defeated Meeker 17-10 in the Region 6 Class 3A softball tournament at the Field of Dreams in Orchard City.

With the win, Brush needed a victory over host Cedaredge to secure a playoff berth in this week's state tournament in Denver.

The Bruins, seeded sixth, could not match the firepower of number seven Brush as the Beetdiggers dealt Cedaredge a 13-3 loss. In order for the Bruins to advance to state competition, a win against league foe Meeker was needed in the tournament's third game.

Cedaredge started strong against the Cowboys and powered its way to a 14-3 win and the Region 6 second qualifying spot.

Brush 13, Bruins 3

The Beetdiggers got busy in the first two innings to produce five runs while their defense kept Cedaredge off the scoreboard in the first three innings of play.

The Bruins managed to post their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning to trail 5-1.

Brush went on a four-run surge in the fifth and a three-run spurt in the sixth to account for a total of 13 runs. Cedaredge scored twice in the sixth, making the final score 13-3.

The Beetdiggers out hit Cedaredge 12-5 in the game. One of the main reason's the Bruins fell behind early in this game was errors. In all, there were seven errors recorded for the Bruins.

Chey Christian was Cedaredge's leading hitter with a home run and three RBIs.

Sam Galley had two hits and scored two runs for the Bruins.

Bruins 14, Cowboys 3

There was a complete turn around for the Bruins in game two with Meeker. A nine-run first inning gave great momentum and confidence to Cedaredge.

The Cowboys committed three errors in the first inning, allowing Cedaredge to score nine runs on four hits, three hit batsmen and a pair of walks.

Scoring in the game slowed considerably in the second and third innings. Meeker scored once in the second inning and the Bruins plated a singleton in the third, giving Cedaredge a 10-1 lead heading to the fourth.

Meeker had its most serious at bat in the top of the fourth with two runs on a pair of hits, a walk and a hit batsman.

The Bruins scored four times in the bottom of the fourth with help from three hits, two walks and an error.

Mik Wilkerson was 3-for-3 with the bat and had two doubles and four RBIs to lead Cedaredge's offense. Kelsey Stroud also had three hits that allowed her to score three times and knock in a run.

Shayna Dale had two hits, with a double and a run scored, to go with her two RBIs.

The Bruins' Brittany Kendall (5-3) was the winning pitcher. She had seven strikeouts in the game.

Number 14, Gunnison, failed to move on after losing to number 11 Valley, 3-1.

State softball pairings have Cedaredge seeded tenth with its first game scheduled for 12:15 on Oct. 23 against number seven Eaton, on the fields of Complex A at the Aurora Sports Park. The winner of the 12:15 contest will face the number two seed, La Junta, at approximately 2:30 p.m. In the top half of the bracket is (3) Sterling, (6) Lamar and (11) Faith Christian.
