Paonia, Cedaredge and Meeker all have 3-0 records atop the 1A WSL standings. The Bruins want to keep their record unblemished to carry confidence into a showdown matchup later this season (Sept. 30) at Cedaredge High School.
Last week's 49-6 romp over Vail Christian's Saints in Carbondale was a step closer to a key matchup with the Eagles.
The Bruins got over 100 yards rushing from two players in quarterback Pedro Madaleno and Isaac Swoffer. Madaleno rushed 10 times for 100 yards and two touchdowns and Swoffer piled up 163 yards on 19 carries resulting in two touchdowns as well. In all, Cedardge rushed 38 times for 349 yards.
Madaleno and Jared Reynolds combined for six of 16 passes for 82 yards, with Reynolds tossing a 60-yard bomb to Chris Lindley for a score. Lindley finished with three catches and 64 yards.
All seven extra point kicks were made by Brendon Klaseen in the 49-6 win.
Defensively, Tre' LaBossiere was an obstacle Vail Christian ball carriers did not want to see as he finished with eight tackles for the Bruins.
Drew Markley, Jared Reynolds, LaBossiere and Toby Waddell sacked the Saints quarterback once each and Sean Dale had an interception. O'Hern recovered one fumble in the contest.
Gunnison is next for the Bruins this Friday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. with Cedaredge celebrating Homecoming.
