Matt Hall and his Cedaredge Bruins' softball team will be looking to duplicate the success they had last season as the new year gets underway. The Bruins enjoyed a 15-7 record last year that included a league championship and a trip to state.
The Bruins have Ray Smith, Angie Morgan, Dick Hamilton, Lonnie Stroud and Jim Hathaway returning as assistant coaches with a couple of newcomers added to the coaching list. Jazmine Gomez, a former player for Hall, will be one of the new coaches, with Taylor (Schaaf) Buchheim completing the list. Buchheim enjoyed a stellar career at Delta High School.
Cedaredge had 22 prospects sign up for action in 2015, with some notable players returning for another year. Senior outfielder Sam Galley is one of those athletes whom Hall lists in the player impact category. Galley plays the outfield and hit four home runs last season.
Junior shortstop Shayna Dale joins Galley as a returning letter winner for the Bruins. Dale was handy with the bat as well in 2014 with three home runs.
Other consistent players touted by Hall included senior Hailey Lofley, who catches, and junior pitchers Lacey Rodriguez and Brittany Kendall.
If the Bruins are to repeat as league champions, and possibly make a deeper run at state, they will need plenty of wins. Some of those wins would benefit Cedaredge chances with power points.
When asked which teams are the ones to beat, and why, Hall responded with, "Basalt and Gunnison are the teams to beat as they are typically the top teams in the league. Beating teams like Delta, Palisade and Montrose, which are 4A teams, could help us improve our ranking in the 3A classification."
Hall believes he has a very good softball team in 2015. The question of how his Bruins will do in 2015 was confidently answered. "We are planning on being league champions again and hosting the regional tournament. We are hoping to improve on last year by being the top team in the regional tournament and placing in the top four at state."
Cedaredge opens play this Friday, Aug. 28, when it hosts Meeker for a 3 p.m. game at the Field of Dreams complex in Eckert. The Bruins' softball weekend continues through Saturday as they travel to Cortez for an 11 a.m. contest against the Panthers. Junior varsity play follows and is schedule to begin with the first pitch around 1 p.m.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
Several people from the North Fork were present to provide input.
