The Cedaredge Bruins stand alone atop the 3A District 5 standings with a perfect 2-0 league mark and a 3-1 overall slate.
Last weekend the Bruins split a pair of games. On Sept. 5 Cedaredge took on Class 3A Faith Christian in Gunnison with the Eagles defeating Cedaredge 15-13.
Cedaredge's second game on Saturday was with host school Gunnison. The Bruins used an eight-run fourth inning to claim a 10-2 victory.
FC 15, Bruins 13
Faith Christian scored twice in the first inning, and the Bruins tied the game with two runs of their own in the second frame.
Both teams scored once in the third for a 3-3 tie heading to the fourth inning. Cedaredge failed to score in the fourth while the Eagles put four runs on the board to take a 7-3 lead.
Faith Christian scored once more in the fifth for an 8-3 lead. Cedaredge bounced back to plate five runs and tie the game at 8-8 after five innings of play.
The Eagles punched four runs across home plate in the sixth inning while Cedaredge retaliated with two counters, making the score 12-10 in favor of the Eagles.
The game's final inning of play produced high anxiety for both teams. Faith Christian scored three times, taking a 15-10 lead. The Bruins were game, but they did not have enough magic in their bats to pull off the win as they, too, scored three runs to fall short in a 15-13 loss to the Eagles.
Shayna Dale led Cedaredge's hit parade with a 3-4 day that included a double, three runs scored and an RBI.
Two hits and two RBIs were recorded by Samantha Galley who was 2-4, and Josie Hiatt with a 2-3 day that included a home run and two runs scored. Mykayla Wilkerson picked up two RBIs on a single in three at bats.
Chey Christian had a pair of doubles in her 2-3 day at the plate, scored two runs and knocked in one run.
Dale led the Bruins on the base paths with two steals.
Brittany Kendall started on the mound for Cedaredge but gave way to Lacey Rodriguez who went four innings in her first action of the year. Rodriguez was saddled with the loss.
Bruins 10, Cowboys 2
This game got off to a slow start with the Bruins taking a 1-0 lead after three innings of play.
An eight-run fourth inning boosted Cedaredge's lead to 9-0 until the seventh inning.
Cedaredge scored once and the Cowboys twice in the final inning to account for the game's final score of 10-2.
The leading hitters for the Bruins included junior Kelsey Stroud's 3-4 performance and two RBIs with a triple and a double. Dale picked up three RBIs on two hits in three at bats.
Rodriguez entered the game in the fourth inning and was the winning pitcher. Kendall and Rodriguez combined for eight strikeouts in the game.
The Bruins are at home against Aspen Sept. 12 for doubleheader action against the Skiers at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
At their March 5 meeting Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes made two appointments to the county planning commission. Steve Shea was reappointed for a three-year term.
