Cedaredge High School's volleyball team posted a 20-5 record last season. Three of those losses came at the hands of Paonia and one to Olathe's Pirates. The fifth loss came in regional play to Dolores.
In 2015, head coach Heather Dunbar is all about having another stellar year and going deeper into the playoffs. "Our senior class is a huge impact class as a whole. We have great athletes that have great commitment and work ethic."
Dunbar is in her eighth season as a volleyball coach. She will receive help from first-year junior varsity coach Terrira Garrison and second-year coach Kristine Beach.
This year's coaching staff will be working with a total of 26 athletes, including freshmen.
Leading the way for the Bruins in 2015 is Kenzie Henderson, a two year all-conference selection. Joining Henderson is teammate Kendall McHugh who was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection last year. Nellie Freeman and Lydia Knutson will "be huge for us this year and will fill huge roles," stated Dunbar.
Amber Jenkins and Hannah Gilmore are included in the list of players to watch. Jenkins will add support to the team effort at setter and as the libero. Gilmore is a very much improved athlete who is driven to succeed. Dunbar sees her as a player who should be a major force on both offense and defense.
It's a competitive 2A Western Slope League this year. All the teams are considered teams to beat if the Bruins are to finish on top. "We are looking to have a successful season. There is no reason we should not surpass our final standings from a year ago," says Dunbar.
The Bruins' season doesn't begin until Tuesday, Sept. 1 against Ridgway at 4 p.m. Next regular season competition is set for Saturday, Sept. 5, when they take part in tournament action in Gunnison.
Prior to regular-season play, Cedaredge is scheduled to work on final preparation for the season with scrimmages in Montrose on Wednesday, Aug 26.
