Cedaredge High School's volleyball team played three matches last week with a win and two losses being recorded. The Bruins defeated Hotchkiss 3-0, lost to Grand Valley 3-2 and fell to Palisade 3-0.

The Bulldogs stayed close in set one before falling 25-18 to the Bruins.

In set two, senior Makayla McKinney started the match for Cedaredge with four straight points off service to give the Bruins a 4-1 lead. Later in the set, Hotchkiss junior Morgan Miller gave the Bulldogs a big boost with her four straight service points giving Cedaredge a 7-5 lead.

The two teams battled back and forth the entire set before Cedaredge eased to the 25-20 win on five straight service points from junior Mikayla Underwood.

Set three stayed close in the early going but McKinney's service generated a 15-8 lead the Bulldogs could not slice into with any appreciable significance.

The Bruins used Courtney Freeman's final serve to score the final point in a 25-14 set three win.

Senior Hannah Gilmore had six kills in the match with teammates Hailey Henrie and Holly Jenkins pounding three kills each.

McKinney and Henrie led the Bruins in aces with eight and five respectively.

At Grand Valley on Sept. 15, the Bruins didn't have enough offense in a 3-2 loss to the Cardinals. Grand Valley lost the first set 20-25, then won the next two, 25-18 and 25-23, lost the fourth set, 17-25 and earned a 15-11 decision in the deciding fifth set.

Gilmore was huge at the net, for Cedaredge, with 14 kills and 10 blocks. McKinney had 20 assists for the Bruins with Underwood adding another 10.

On Sept. 16, Cedaredge traveled to Palisade to take on the 4A Bulldogs. The first set of the match was a good one with the Bruins giving Palisade more than was bargained for in a 20-25 loss for the Bruins.

Palisade was in control in the second and third sets with wins of 25-8 and 25-15.

Cedaredge will host Gunnison on Sept. 24 with varsity action set for 6 p.m. The Bruins play league-leading Coal Ridge (1-0, 3-1) on Sept. 27 and host Paonia on Sept. 30 at 5 p.m.
