Hotchkiss High School had a fantastic week of wrestling. The Bulldogs wrestled Olathe to a 68-4 win on Wednesday, Jan. 18. A tri-meet against Meeker and Norwood/Nucla also resulted in wins for Hotchkiss. Hotchkiss got past Meeker 41-27 then battered Norwood/Nucla 63-18.
Topping off the week was Saturday's victory at the annual Screaming Eagle Tournament in Paonia.
Hotchkiss outscored 17 other teams with 201.5 points. Results for that tournament are found in a separate story in today's sports section.
Hotchkiss 68, Olathe 4
The first bout of this match was in the 132-pound class. Hotchkiss' Colton Hall was a forfeit winner for the Bulldogs. There were five other forfeit wins for Hotchkiss, including victories at 160, 170, 195, 113 and 126.
Hotchkiss 138-pounder Colton Deluzio scored five points for his 17-1 (2:48) technical fall over Brent Gray. JD Miller controlled his Olathe opponent to score a second technical fall (17-0) against Caleb Bauchman.
Pinfall wins for Hotchkiss were earned by Kevin Chavez (220) and Joseph Nault (285).
At 182 pounds, Olathe's Justin Mosher and the Bulldogs' Parker Katzdorn treated fans to an overtime period. The extra period began with each wrestler having four points. Katzdorn broke the tie with a takedown to win 6-4.
The Bulldogs' Presley Pene scored four points for his 15-1 major decision over Jonathan Bollinger in the 120-pound match.
Olathe's four points went to Keenan Mansker in the 152-pound match on a 9-1 major decision over Jace Peebles.
HHS 41 Meeker 27
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 32-12 lead after the first nine matches. Hotchkiss had a forfeit at 106, a technical fall (Sergio Campos, 18-1, 4:52) at 113, a Pene forfeit at 120, a Colton Hall pin at 132, an 8-5 decision from Peebles at 152 and a pin (1:09) from Wade Katzdorn at 160.
Meeker got pins at 170 and 182 narrowing the scoring gap to 32-24.
Hotchkiss added points for Devin Curtis' 3-1 decision at 195 and Chavez pinned his 220-pound opponent in 2:55.
The Cowboy's final three points came on Tyler IIgens' sudden victory win in the first overtime, 3-1, against Nault at 285.
HHS 63, Nor/Nuc 18
The Bulldogs were relentless in their efforts against the combined squad from Norwood and Nucla.
Matches began at 220 pounds with Ethan Barnes pinning (2:32) Hotchkiss' Chavez. Fortunes changed drastically after Barnes' win.
Nault (285) and Mayberry (106) won by forfeit. The next six weights; 113, 120, 126, 132, 138 and 145 were all pinfall wins for the Bulldogs and blossomed Hotchkiss' lead to 48-6.
Norwood/Nucla won, with a pin, in the 152-pound bout.
Wade Katzdorn won, by decision, 7-2, in the 160-pound match.
Norwood/Nucla's final points came on a Trenton Armintrout pin over Jared Cantrell at 170 pounds.
Parker Katzdorn (182) and Curtis (195) finished the match with forfeit wins.
Hotchkiss is on the road to Center for participation in the Center Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 28. Matches begin at 9 a.m.
