Two Paonia High School juniors participated in the Colorado High School Activities Association's 2016-2017 All State Choir last weekend.
Derek Holt and Caden Meilner attended the event with PHS choir director Dee Holt. Derek Holt a Tenor II, sang in the Mixed Choir, and Meilner, a Bass II, sang in the Men's Choir. They joined about 500 other All State Choir juniors and seniors from across the state for the three-day event, held Feb. 2-4 at the BellCo Theatre at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. The annual event culminates in a Saturday evening choral performance.
Only about 25 percent of the 1,500-2000 students to audition receive all-state honors. To qualify, Holt and Meilner had to pass a rigorous audition process last October. Once at the all-state event they were required to pass a final audition. Choir members then spend more than two days rehearsing for Saturday's final performance. This year the mixed choir was conducted by Dr. Derrick Fox, accompanied by Rob Lowe. The men's choir was conducted by Dr. Paul Rardin, accompanied by Renae Gudvangen.
On Dec. 4 Delta County Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes denied the application of Paonia Holdings, LLC for a change of land use for the property at 41322 Highway 133, with an adjacent residence at 41402 Highway 133 and an ancillary property at 16180 Stevens Gulch Road.
The property is owned by Bowie Resources, LLC, and was formerly used as a coal load-out site.
