Carl Mazzella died Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at his home in Delta. He was 84.
Rosary was recited Friday, May 6, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Mass of Christian burial was held May 7 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olathe with Father Gregory M. Drahman presiding. Interment with military honors by Lee Marts VFW Post #3571 followed at Mesa View Cemetery in Delta.
Mr. Mazzella was born in Charleston, W.Va., April 17, 1932, to Antonio and Lucia (Tanga) Mazzella. He spent his childhood in Charleston and graduated from Charleston Catholic School in 1950. After graduation he attended the University of Charleston and Western Institute of Technology. He received a master's degree.
He married Barbara Halls on June 14, 1980, in Davenport, Iowa.
While living in Florida, Mr. Mazzella worked for NASA and PanAm in the Apollo spacecraft program. In association with the U.S. Army, he was involved in the Rock Island Arsenal with the Abrams tank radar and missile guidance system and the Apache helicopter helmet target system. He was the liaison between the U.S. military and the manufacturers.
Mr. Mazzella was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olathe.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Mazzella of Delta; a son, Jonathan Mazzella of Rangley; two stepsons, Tony Miller of East Moline, Ill., and Stephen (Heather) Mil-ler of Grand Junction; two sons-in-heart, Joe (Mary) Miller and Kelly (Kerstin) Owens, all of Delta; three daughters, Lucy (Ernest) Kolonick of Delta, Jessica (Jason) Prisbrey of Eckert and Theresa Mazzella of Iowa City, Iowa; one daughter-in-heart, Marna Kirstatter of Montrose; his sister, Rosalie Mazzella of South Charleston, W.Va.; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren with one on the way.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine and Judy.
