The softball season is young but Cedaredge's Bruins are playing well and served notice that they are a contender in 3A softball ranks. A 7-6 win over 3A District 1 opponent Faith Christian leaves the Bruins with a 2-0 record.

Faith Christian is 4-4 and in second place in its league standings.

Cedaredge (2-0) and Basalt (3-0) are atop the 3A District 5 League standings.

Against Faith Christian on Saturday, in Gunnison, the Bruins eased to a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.

A three-run second frame upped Cedaredge's lead to 5-0, but not without cost to the Bruins. Starting pitcher Lacey Rodriguez rolled an ankle sliding into second base after slapping a double.

"I believe Lacey will be good to go on Monday at practice," stated Cedaredge coach Matt Hall.

Cedaredge scored twice in the third and led 7-4 going to the fifth frame.

Rodriguez's replacement, Brittany Kendall, came on to keep the Eagles at bay in spite of a four-run third. After that, Faith Christian plated single runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to make the final score 7-6.

Junior Katie Hyke sparked the Cedaredge offense with a home run and seniors Kelsey Stroud and Shayna Dale supplied two hits apiece with Stroud picking up a double and Dale a triple in the win.

The sophomore dominated Eagles got a pair of hits from Marsella Evans and Abrianah McGaw in a nine-hit attack.

Hall's assessment of play against Faith Christian included bright spots for his Bruins. "The great offensive start was one bright spot (built a 5-0 lead). Everyone seemed to hit real well. The defense stepped up at the end to seal the win. Last year we relied mostly on our offense, so it was great to see our defense finish the job. On offense I was very impressed with my younger girls that stepped up to the

moment -- sophomores Emalee Brooks (catcher after Lacey went down), Shelby Stone (2B) and Hannah Gardner (3B). Shayna Dale and Katie Hyke had some huge hits (triple and home run respectively)."

The Bruins were in Basalt on Tuesday for doubleheader action and play in Aspen on Sept. 8 with a 4 p.m. starting time.

Cedaredge will play four games over the weekend at the Berthoud Spartan Invitational.

The Bruins start play against Berthoud at 1 p.m. on Friday and face Widefield at 3 p.m. the same day.

A look into next week's schedule shows the Bruins at Meeker on Sept. 13 (4 p.m.) and in Delta on Sept. 15 (4 p.m.).

Rodriguez’s double came against Faith Christian’s Eagles and helped the Bruins build a 5-0 lead in the second inning. Unfortunately, Rodriguez sustained an injury during her slide forcing her to retire from the game. Cedaredge won the game 7-6.
