Fifty-three graduating seniors at Cedaredge High School received their diplomas at commencement exercises at the school on Sunday, May 15.

Principal Randy Brown, in remarks to the assembled students, faculty and guests, noted that the Class of 2016 was one of high academic achievement. Of the graduating seniors, 18 were members of National Honor Society, and 21 earned grade point averages of 3.5 or higher.

Though the seniors had completed 13 years of formal schooling, Brown said, their education in life was only beginning.

Valedictorians Lydia Knutson and Shane Gates achieved grade point averages of 4.23 and 4.22 respectively. Knutson's address stressed the importance of community and gave praise to the close-knit and supportive environment that Surface Creek Valley has provided for their schooling.

Gates reminded his classmates that they had just completed the easiest part of their lives, and he thanked school, community, and parents for support and encouragement for future endeavors.

Salutatorians Noah LaVau and Mckenzie Moore finished their high school careers with grade point averages of 4.1. LaVau's remarks were a light and humorous reminiscence of assignments and tests, and a thanks to individuals who had been important influences in his life -- in particular his mother.

Moore recounted the travails of "senioritis" and offered some commonsense advice to classmates on finding meaning in life and reaching dreams.

The graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2016 included the traditional parent dedication ceremony and slide presentation highlighting individual class members.

The turning of the tassels was officiated by class members Tyler Reynolds, Kerry Ribbens and Nellie Freeman, and that concluded graduation ceremonies for the Cedaredge High School Class of 2016.
