The Cedaredge town trustees have taken steps to enter the restaurant business, albeit hopefully in a limited way. The new town enterprise is serving the food and beverage needs of those using the Cedaredge Golf Course.
Dubbed the Cedaredge Grill, the operation was the subject of a brief report to the town board on March 17 by golf pro Larry Murphy. He told the trustees, "The kitchen area has been cleaned and is ready for the next food operator. We are currently selling food and drinks from the golf shop and accounting through the golf shop register. We now have the temporary liquor license."
The sandwich and beverage service is considered a temporary enterprise as town officials hope that a permanent lessee/manager of the clubhouse restaurant operation will step forward and assume operations soon.
At their February meeting, the trustees took several official steps enabling operation of the Cedaredge Grill to begin dispensing food and alcoholic beverages.
• Trustees appointed Murphy as the manager of the Cedaredge Grill.
• Approved a transfer of ownership from K & C's Local Grill, LLC to the Town of Cedaredge of the hotel and restaurant liquor license.
• Approved a liquor license application for itself at the Cedaredge Golf Course restaurant located at 500 S.E. Jay Avenue.
• Trustees approved a temporary liquor license permit for the Town of Cedaredge beginning Feb. 19 to April 26, 2016.
Though trustees continue to hope that a new operator for the clubhouse restaurant will be found soon, they are hedging their business bets by appropriating $132,000 in an additional budget item to cover operations of the Cedaredge Grill through the remainder of 2016. This would be offset by revenues from the operation.
Murphy's budget document estimates expenses of $125,147, and he projects a profit of $6,853. The figures don't include any lease payments to the town. Lease payments of about $10,000 annually were a feature of the last restaurant lessee's agreement. Those funds were budgeted to go directly into the town's golf course fund.
With approval of its liquor license for the Cedaredge Grill, the town itself becomes part of a popular economic sector of the town. There are a dozen businesses in the immediate area where alcoholic beverages are either made, sold and/or consumed.
Murphy has told the town board that he has some experience in the food and beverage service business. Two years ago as the town board was looking for a restaurant operator he pitched the idea of a town-run operation like the Cedaredge Grill that has just been approved.
On Dec. 4 Delta County Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes denied the application of Paonia Holdings, LLC for a change of land use for the property at 41322 Highway 133, with an adjacent residence at 41402 Highway 133 and an ancillary property at 16180 Stevens Gulch Road.
The property is owned by Bowie Resources, LLC, and was formerly used as a coal load-out site.
