An engineering firm wants $33,415 from the Town of Cedaredge which officials say is over and above any contract amount for work done on the long-stalled enhancement beautification project.
The town trustees at their regular Oct. 20 meeting solidified their position on the issue and will require better reasons for making additional payment besides just receiving a bill.
A representative of the engineering firm, SGM, made a presentation to the town board during a dinner work session in September. Following that presentation, Mayor Gene Welch recommended paying the firm "some amount from zero to $10,000." Last week at the town board's regular meeting Trustee Ray Hanson said, "I don't agree with $33,000, either."
Trustee Al Smith asked, "How do we arrive at the $10,000 figure? What do we accomplish by giving them $10,000 as opposed to giving them zero?"
Town administrator Katie Sickles noted that the project contract stipulated a "not to exceed amount," and the bill for $33,415 exceeds the amount.
Hanson said, "They simply overspent [on the project]."
Trustees then adopted a motion stating there would be no further payments at this time pending further justification on SGM's part for the additional charges on the bill.
In other business at its regular Oct. 20 meeting, the Cedaredge Town Board addressed:
• Major components in the new sewer plant were installed incorrectly. The plant has been running at half capacity. Repairs will require complete draining of the 180,000-gallon sewage processing basins for re-installation of drain valves in the bottom.
• Trustees gave staff approval to proceed with a study of new water and sewer rates.
• Police Chief Dan Sanders reported that the local marijuana harvest is under way as pot matures and the drug's potency reaches its peak. There have been reports of theft of ripe crops of pot from legal outdoor grows; one of the ways that pot falls into the hands of minors. There have also been complaints of objectionable odors outdoors, the chief said.
• Sharon Pierce of Cedaredge told trustees the town has good police officers and needs all six staff positions filled.
• Interviews for a police officer have been held, and a golf course superintendent position remains open.
• Trustees gave a consent for the town to take over administration of the Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway program.
• There are three of the free Celebrate Cedaredge vendor street fairs planned for 2017: June, July and August.
• The Parade of Lights will be Dec. 3.
• Friends of the Library made $6,759 at the AppleFest book sale.
• A library strategic plan is zeroing in on the outgrown library building.
• Trustees agreed to terms of a lease agreement for the golf course restaurant.
• There were two proclamations issued. One was in observance of ESA (Epsilon Sigma Alpha) Sorority and its charitable work in Surface Creek Valley. The other was in observance of Senior Safety Week and Month.
• Trustees ratified in advance a yet-to-be-made planning commission recommendation naming James Keehne to the commission.
At their March 5 meeting Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes made two appointments to the county planning commission. Steve Shea was reappointed for a three-year term.
