The energy and enthusiasm Darnell Place-Wise has brought to the Delta Area Chamber of Commerce earned praise from members of the Delta City Council last week. They were especially pleased with Deltarado Days and the decision to move most activities to Confluence Park. The park was the site of a vendor village, kids' activities, the car show, Kiwanis/Elk barbecues, live music, a beer garden, and grass volleyball, cornhole and pickleball tournaments. The large crowds flowed over to Fort Uncompahgre, which offered free admission for the day.
Place-Wise, the chamber's executive director, said the change in venue was welcomed by the vendors, and the kids' area was packed all day. When Delta firefighters turned their water hoses on the kids, shrieks of delight were heard. The car show featured 117 vehicles and both the Kiwanis and the Elks ran out of food. Next year, she anticipates increased participation in the grass volleyball, cornhole and pickleball tournaments, which were all new this year.
The parade was "awesome," she said. Entries were announced by Marc Kanter, who spent some time beforehand gathering interesting bits of information about each entry to include in his commentary.
Board members, volunteers and event sponsors greatly contributed to the success of the event.
The weather had some impact on Friday night's street dance, but a rain shower shortly before the rodeo Saturday night didn't deter the fans. The combination of heat and high humidity prompted several calls for medical assistance during the day Saturday.
Place-Wise was at the city council's Aug. 20 meeting to request the release of $3,000 budgeted for chamber activities. The funds will cover the cost of advertising for DeltaFest, Deltarado Days and the upcoming Small Business Saturday, she explained.
Those events highlight all the city has to offer, and build a sense of community when businesses, organizations and volunteers work together to pull them off, she said after the meeting.
Deltarado Days 2018 will take place the last weekend in July. Now's the time for the DHS graduates of 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008 to begin planning their class reunions.
Also in the works is the final DeltaFest of the year, on Thursday, Sept. 7. Small Business Saturday is Nov. 25.
