The Dream Team, a group of local youngsters, ran in the Cherry Days 5k last week during Paonia's 70th celebration of the fruit. The 5k was a fundraiser for the Paonia High School cross country team, which was able to raise enough money to buy much needed new uniforms in time for the upcoming season. Organizer Brandy Sparks, also the cross country head coach, said this year's 5k featured 76 runners and walkers, a big improvement over last year's 58 participants. Sparks expressed much gratitude to the event's sponsors for providing prizes: Delicious Orchards, Paonia Flower Shop, Paonia Farm and Supply, Hightower Cafe and the Bank of Colorado. "I could not believe the amount of support we got for the 5k,"Sparks said. "I was very pleased to see the large number of runners we had in the race."
