Chili cook-off was big crowd pleaser

The Surface Creek community once again turned out in big numbers to show support for its firefighters of the Cedaredge Volunteer Fire Department. The 16th annual Five-Alarm Chili Cook-off fundraiser got the events of AppleFest 2017 started with 650 people participating and making donations to the department.
There were 62 favorite chili recipes entered. The top honors for local chili chefs went this year to Marcy Peterson for her green chili and also for the people's choice honor. Beth Meyer took the red chili recipe award, and Jim Ferganchick's favorite recipe took top honors in the hot chili category.
This was also the 16th year it has been overseen by Cedaredge firefighter Robin Melson. Her years of work on the event were praised by other members of the department especially since this will be the last year that she serves as organizer. Robin is also in her 20th year as a member of the department and said she will be retiring in a few months.
