During halftime of the first home football game on Sept. 4, the CHS Marching Band played music up to the bleachers completely filled with fans from the community. Its season began in the heat of July, and now competition season begins to heat up.
The first competition was the Colorado West Invitational, taking place at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction on Sept. 26. Band members spend their days preparing for the competition season, marching the show early in the morning and late at night. The show on the field is called "Faces in the Sky," an unconventional show for a 1A band.
"Competition season is very exciting," director Melissa Gross exclaims. "It gives us the opportunity to perform for a large group of our peers from across the state." Although the CHS band boasts a streak of four state championships, each member dedicates time and effort to becoming the best they can be and practices like they've never won.
The 2015 band is an even mix of new marchers and experienced veterans. Junior Daniel Roberts states, "The band is looking strong this year and we are going to continue our tradition of excellence." Young recruits also express excitement about the upcoming competitions. Freshman Niala Stair shares her thoughts on her first season with the CHS Bruins. "I feel very proud to be in this band and I'm excited to see what we can do on the field."
Colorado West is the first competition of three major events, including regionals competition on Oct. 15 and state competition taking place in Pueblo Oct 26. Melissa Gross encourages members of the community to attend band competitions, which feature the CHS band as well as other bands from around Delta, Montrose and Mesa counties. "It's really a great experience to see what all these high school music programs have accomplished," she said.
