After playing in Gunnison on Tuesday, Sept. 19, Cedaredge Bruins' softball team raced past the Cowboys, 21-8, and now rests in second place in the 3A WSL District 5 race.

Cedaredge (4-1, 4-7 overall) broke a 7-7 tie in the sixth inning with a 14-run barrage to propel the Bruins to a 21-8 decision over Gunnison (2-3, 2-11).

Gunnison started the game with a three-run start in the first inning only to have the Bruins claw back in the second inning and a five-run spurt of their own. The Cowboys picked up a single run in the bottom of the third making the score 5-4 in favor of the Bruins.

Cedaredge added two more runs in the fourth for a 7-4 lead. Gunnison rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth tying the game at 7-7.

The Cowboys had no real answer for Cedaredge's 14-run explosion in the top of the sixth but did make a little noise with one run in the bottom half of the inning for a final score of 21-8.

Bruins' centerfielder Josie Hiatt (Sr) had a solid day with the bat for Cedaredge with three hits in four at bats. Hiatt scored four times, hit two doubles and smacked a triple for a five-RBI day. Teammate Hannah Gardner (Jr) was 2-4 with a pair of doubles and five RBIs in support of Hiatt's efforts.

Neveah Martinez scored twice, hit a double and knocked in two runs for the Bruins. Kambry Hall (Sr) also had two hits (including a triple), scored twice and had an RBI.

Summer Young was the winning pitcher with four innings of work where she gave up three hits and four runs. Elle Lewis had two innings of relief work and gave up one hit and four runs.

A doubleheader with Basalt was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23, but inclement weather forced the games to be postponed. Those games are tentatively scheduled to be played on Wednesday, Sept. 27.

The Bruins faced Meeker (in Meeker) on Tuesday, Sept. 26 and are slated to play Delta's Panthers, in Delta, on Homecoming Friday (Sept. 29) at 3 p.m. Cedaredge also takes on Palisade at Bergman Field on the campus of CMU on Saturday at 7 p.m. Next week's schedule has the Bruins hosting Gunnison Oct. 3 at 3 p.m. and traveling to Cortez on Oct. 6 for doubleheader action.
