Clean Power Plan ensures sane, safe energy supply

Dear Editor:

I urge everyone to stand up for themselves in their own lives, and to participate in democratic processes. Be vocal with decision makers and your many representatives. Presidential politics is divisive and a distraction from our representatives and governmental agencies, where law, budgets and programs are made and regulated. The EPA has a public input period open until Jan. 21 for the Clean Power Plan (CPP), which is being formed in conjunction with all the states, and which I'm advocating here. EPA.gov/cleanpowerplan states that by reducing the United States' CO2 output to two-thirds of our 2005 level by 2030, output of other toxins will also diminish. We will avoid thousands of premature deaths and have thousands fewer asthma attacks and hospitalizations in 2030 and every year beyond as a result of enacting this rule. Implementing the rule will garner climate benefits of $20 billion, health benefits of $14-$34 billion, and net benefits of $26-$45 billion. The CPP will also protect public health, avoiding 3,600 premature deaths, 1,700 heart attacks, 90,000 asthma attacks, and 300,000 missed work and school days each year.

State support of the CPP is an opportunity for Colorado to continue to lead the way to a sane, safe, and secure energy supply. Comment at EPA.gov/cleanpowerplan. As their site says, "Taking action now is critical. Reducing CO2 emissions from power plants and driving investment in clean energy technologies strategies is an essential step in lessening the impacts of climate change and providing a more certain future for our health, our environment, and future generations." Contact any and all decision makers, movers and shakers, because your input makes a difference!
