A county Human Services Department employee's professional knowledge and quick action at work helped to resuscitate a young child who had stopped breathing, the county commissioners learned on Monday.
Rita Fowler, a caseworker for the county's Adult Protective Services unit at the North Fork Annex, was working at her desk recently. A mother had brought her young child with her to an appointment in another office in the annex when the baby stopped breathing, reported county HHS director Chuck Lemoine.
Fowler, who is also a registered nurse, was nearby and took the situation in hand. Fowler resuscitated the child who was later found to have had fluid in its lungs from being given a dose of liquid vitamins.
Mother and child are together and doing well, Lemoine reported.
