At the Nov. 2 council meeting, Crawford trustees unanimously approved three donations totaling $1,137. The donations were all included in the town's 2016 budget.
A donation of $500 was awarded to the Delta Housing Authority. In 2016, said Mayor Wanda Gofforth, the DHA made nine loans through the Single Family Owner-Occupied Rehabilitation program. Of those loans, two went to homeowners in Crawford.
According to the DHA website, the program provides technical and financial assistance for general repairs and improvements. The program is open to eligible homeowners in the six Region 10 counties and their communities.
According to the DHA website, the rehabilitation program allows qualifying homeowners to pay construction costs through low-interest, easy-term loans. Funding covers a broad range of rehabilitation work including roofing, electrical, plumbing, gutters, flooring, heating systems, windows, doors and weatherization. "Special attention is given to health and safety issues, handicap accessibility and code issues."
Trustees also approved a $200 donation to the annual Thanksgiving Day community dinner in Hotchkiss. The town has donated $250 in the past, but since other organizations and churches also offer Thanksgiving day dinners, and since the budget is very tight, trustee Tammy Broughton made a motion to donate $200.
All Points Transit was granted a donation of $437 for 2017. The Montrose-based nonprofit provides transportation to seniors and those with disabilities in Montrose, Delta and San Miguel counties who lack other means of transportation. According to its request letter, from Jan. 1 to the end of September of this year, All Points Transit delivered 7,964 dial-a-ride trips in Delta County, a 10 percent increase over 2015. "This is a good, good program," said Mayor Gofforth.
Council also adopted a proclamation declaring November as Hospice and Palliative Care Month in Crawford.
"You might not be aware of it, but even though Crawford is a small community, we have served seven patients so far this year," said Nancy Hovde, the new Development Director for HopeWest. "We are very present in this community."
In addition to Hospice care, the nonprofit provides grief support for children and adults, pain control and other services, said Hovde. The declaration, in part, provides "a unique opportunity to increase the public's awareness of HopeWest and acknowledge the community that makes it all possible.
"We can't do it without community support," said Hovde.
On Dec. 4 Delta County Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes denied the application of Paonia Holdings, LLC for a change of land use for the property at 41322 Highway 133, with an adjacent residence at 41402 Highway 133 and an ancillary property at 16180 Stevens Gulch Road.
The property is owned by Bowie Resources, LLC, and was formerly used as a coal load-out site.
