In a little more than four weeks, the Crawford community will host its annual Christmas celebration. Collenette Vervloet with the Crawford Chamber of Commerce visited with the Crawford Town Board to work out details for preparations leading up to the festivities.
Vervloet told the trustees during their work session on Oct. 18 of a problem with decorating the huge pine tree in front of town hall. In the past Delta Montrose Electric Association has helped hang the lights on the tree, estimated to be 75-100 feet tall. However, Vervloet was told that this year DMEA does not have anyone certified to do this, and won't have an employee certified in time for this year.
She reported they have a volunteer to do the lights, but they needed a lift truck. After some discussion, it was decided the tree was taller than any available lift, and getting electricity to it was also a problem.
With the Town Hall serving as the focal point for holiday events such as the Festival of Trees and visits with Santa, the chamber is hoping to decorate town hall.
"At our board meeting," said Vervloet, "it was observed that without the tree being lighted, Town Hall is boring. Can I put things up?"
Bruce Bair, public works director, noted it would be a 2-3 day project to prepare the building for exterior lighting. As an alternative he suggested decorating the windows from the inside. "It would look really cool without having to get a lift and all that other stuff," he said.
Vervloet picked up the idea quickly, noting they could have a building lighting ceremony before the Parade of Lights, set for Friday, Nov. 24. Trustees also offered suggestions to add to holiday spirit.
Vervloet also told the board that the chamber is looking to fill two seats on its board. The positions are for two years. There will be a nominating meeting on Nov 13, and anyone interested in service is asked to contact Vervloet at 970-921-5505.
